Gladiolus Glads

Gladiolus Glads
Why is there rust on my rods Gladiolus?

My glade had risen about 3 feet high now, but I noticed a stain rust on the edges of leaves at the base of each plant as they seem to be drying out, and the flowers are dry before opening. I 'm not over watering, and I do not think I am under-watering. What is the problem and can it be fixed with a common insecticide such as SevinDust?

Hey PunkinBoo, Gladiolus Rust (Uromyces transversalis); There fungicides mentioned below, I looked for a common product containing these products, and can not find – but you should be able to find one of them to a farm and garden store (as Agaway our local Conway is better farm and garden) Uromyces transversalis Thum., The causative agent of gladiolus rust (GR), is an obligate parasite that grows and reproduces only on members of the family Iridaceae, including Gladiolus, Tritonia, Crocosmia and Watsonia spp. Spore dimensions and diagnostic features have been described for microscopic confirmation of this pathogen. Gladiolus rust infects leaves and stems of host plants and under heavy inoculum pressure, may also infect flowers (Ferreira 1989). The spores can contaminate the corms, rhizomes and flowers and are transported over long distances by wind. GR curative fungicides are available – a group of fungicides discussed for genetic resource management is the triazoles. Triazoles are products containing myclobutanil, propiconazole, tebuconazole, or TETRACONAZOLE. These products provide systemic activity rapidly with the opportunity to kill the rust fungus once it infects the plant tissue. The second group of fungicides is that include the strobilurin azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin and trifloxystrobin. This group has some systemic activity, but strobilurins are not as rapidly absorbed as triazoles. This group is not as systematic as triazoles and does not seem to be most effective in killing the fungus from it is established in the plant.
