Hyacinth Floating
How to fight against algae in the pond's New?

I just created a pond that is ~ 100 gallons. There is no filter mechanics, only a small pump circulating water. It is water-lilly plant type, 2 water hyacinth, a plant sword underwater and a bunch of floating plants. There are two fish: goldfish by 4 inches and 6-inch koi. There was an abundance of cruddy looking algae on the pond bottom. How do I get the best care? A person at the pet store recommended something called Microbe Lift. Is this useful?

To reduce algae in the long term, you must restrict the nutrients and sunlight in water. It needs both to develop, Plants are the others. Practically, you can achieve this by having some plants surface, like water lilies you have, which reduced light levels entering the pond. Any shade other would also be useful, this floating, such as ornaments, not aid, or otherwise objects around to create some shade is helpful. Try not to shade the water lilies so much as They need bright direct light in order to flower profusely. To reduce levels of nutrients in your pond, there are some things you can do that will a major effect. Remove debris such as leaves of plants decaying, etc., do not overfeed your fish as food waste and rotten fish will rot to become nutrients that will feed algae growth, prevent runoff from surrounding soil, as it brings elements dissolved nutrients with it too. The waste is processed by bacteria in water, largely nitrogen compounds are transformed into nutrients that will fuel growing green. By adding bacteria in your water, you keep this process as even and rapid pace as possible, and also improve the quality water for your fish – what is really important, such as nitrogen compounds can kill fish. To maximize the levels of bacteria, you can buy mixtures of liquids or dry water supplies stores. Water filters generally contain high levels of bacteria, but you have chosen not to use, so just increasing the level of waterborne help much. The product recommended by the store employee company would like this. The bacteria will keep the water healthy and a little cleaner, but will generally be better to improve your fish health, in my opinion. There are several types of algae that colonize the ponds, the free float type that you seem to have, and another type, called hedge against weeds, which are long strands of very fine algae, which clumps together – while you may not have that at present, it will probably happen in the future. This is preferable to remove manually, using a cane or similar, and entwine around. There are other additives you can add, and I prefer using natural minerals and enzymes to accomplish the task. Nishikoi make a product called "Goodbye Green Water ', and there is a book cover weed called" Blanket Answer ", both of they are effective and easy to treat smaller ponds and are natural and safe for fish and wildlife. There is a link to Blanket Answer here-http: / / www.koibitz.com / Scripts / prodView http://www.allaboutkoi.co.uk/blanket-answer-combats-blanket-weed-p-29755.html and Goodbye Green Water by -. asp? idProduct = 378 If you use a natural product like these, your pond should improve within a few weeks and it will be more effective than simple bacteria alone. Even if you do not have a built in pump You might also consider a portable filter, which help oxygenate the pond, as well as waste process more quickly, and they can cost a few dollars, and help make a difference too, because they absorb the largest pieces of debris and algae agglomerated. (There are products that help the clump of algae, and thus become filtered, but I make no further mention that your current choice is not to have a pump, but worth considering if you ever have one). Water Snails also eat algae, these may occur naturally, but if you could add some of these help expedite the clearance. On an ongoing basis, remove any plant debris as it happens. You might consider adding some weeds more submerged oxygenating, which will improve water quality for your fish. As the water warms, it is naturally less able to retain dissolved oxygen, so they can be a lifesaver in the summer. (A pump or the filter would increase the absorption oxygen too). Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

The wastewater treatment processes described in this Manual of Practice (MOP) include soil-based and aquatic systems. The common element in all of these systems is the major contribution made by the “natural” environmental components, which provide the desired treatment.
