Edible Flowers in Edible Landscapes
It is undisputed that most people grow flowers, strictly for their aesthetic value as not many realize that there are many varieties of flowers that can be consumed. Flowers can make amazing flavor and color to salads, and make great decorations for cakes and other dishes.
Flowers can also be used to make teas, extracts and flavor can be used in cakes, frostings, candies and other foods. Many flowers are also very good for you. Roses are very rich in vitamin C, in particular the wild rose.
Nasturtiums and concerns were also a good dose of vitamin C, and dandelion blossoms contain both vitamin C and vitamin A. If a bloom is not toxic, it is considered technically edible, but not all edible flowers are tasty.
Always keep in mind that you must be absolutely sure of what you eat because some flowers are poisonous Look alikes! You should never eat flowers if you have hay fever, asthma or other allergies.
Never eat flowers that have been sprayed with any type pesticide. Be sure to choose flowers that do not just wilted. Remember, even edible flowers should be consumed in moderation.
Some people may still have minor reactions to large quantities of edible flowers. Some common flowering plants should NEVER be eaten. Lily-of-the-valley is a plant of this type which is very toxic. Other flowers that should not be consumed include hydrangeas, daffodils, the wisteria, lupines, hyacinths, castor beans, rhododendrons, sweet peas, clematis, bleeding hearts, oleanders and calla lilies.
This is just a partial list! Always research thoroughly before eating a flower, and even checking the varieties of the same type of flower. For purposes of planning landscape, you should probably focus on perennials.

– Dianthus comes in shades of red, white and pink.

Perennials continue to return year after year, without need for replanting each year. It is a very important part of the landscaping, since the landscaping should require only minimal maintenance.
