Hybrid Orchid

The history of orchids

Most of us regard the orchid as a beautiful flower, exotic and romantic. Most are unaware of their spectacular history and the passionate efforts which went into research, cataloging and creating the orchids which we enjoy today.

A register of orchids will be held at the Royal Horticultural Society of London. The vanilla orchid was the first to come into Europe back in 1510. This was the source for the second single most expensive flavoring (the most expensive being the saffron crocus). Over one hundred years have passed, until that in 1635 when the Cypripedium reginae was imported from North America, this is when orchids were first assessed for their decorative elements. The interest of the orchid blooms from this point. However, even as late as the 1800s, it was very rare for a collector of fine more than a few samples. In 1804, both Berlin and Paris Botanical Garden both contained only seven exotic species of orchids! The Viennese had most to all eleven specials which, in England, there were only three exotic orchids. These figures have been low for lack of trying, importing countries were all orchids time, however, they died in transit, or are not kept in conditions that have enabled plants to survive in their new climates.

Jean Linden was instrumental in increasing our knowledge of orchids when in 1845 he traveled to South and Central America to study the natural environment of orchids. The reports that Linden wrote were crucial for recreation humidity environments that we now associate with most orchids.

Many entrepreneurs who thought at first that this would be the way to make their millions have been curtailed in their businesses as they experienced huge losses due to the number of orchids do not survive the initial travel. There were only four companies successfully in Britain, one of them being Sanders, who has continued to grow in the market for orchids for many years after.

In the early nineteenth century, Dr. Salisbury has studied the germination of orchid and from this property has learned what has allowed the industry to progress and most orchids have been imported suddenly become a more viable investment. With this new knowledge of a gardener working for Veitch first tried to cross different species of orchids in 1853. It was not until 1856 that the first hybrid orchid was created. From that time on several other hybrids have been created. Mr. Dominy has managed this probably had no idea how this point and how it would change the future of the culture of orchids. To date, the perfect black orchid is still being sort after and is always illusory.

Today's special qualities and rare orchids are appreciated. In many areas there species of orchids which are considered endangered and can be prosecuted for picking or damaging these in any way. Some orchids are definitely for viewing. The orchid family is the largest family of flowers known and will continue to grow with the hybrids are created each year.
