Perennial Garden Basics

Are all perennials that live for more than two seasons and produce stems die to the ground each autumn. They are the heart of most flower gardens and wide range of benefits from the landscape gardener. Perennials are valuable for their ability to flower, spread and multiply from year to year. They are also known for their shape, texture, vibrant colors and their ability to attract birds and other wildlife in the garden. Perennials can stand on their own in the landscape, but can be supplemented by a few well placed annually. While perennials are easy to grow, there is little guidance on basic maintenance to follow that will help your garden flourish.

In spring, the first task is obvious, remove any debris that has collected over the winter. After that, cut towards the ground the plants are left standing in the fall precedent. When cleaning the garden walk lightly and rake lightly. You do not want to disturb new growth. Once the garden is cleaned, look around the garden to see if there are empty spaces. If there are, you may want to add some new plants. Ideally, the perennial bed should bloom from spring to fall to the garden in September seems a little sparse add pants end of the season as autumn joy sedum, the chrysanthemums or asters. Another way to add color in the garden is to plant annuals in the spring. Although they only last a year annuals bloom all season.

Fertilize with a slow-release fertilizers garden general and adding lime to the garden in early the season will receive plants made a good start and feed them throughout the season. Each spring, spreading compost throughout the garden perennials to improve soil consistency.

In summer, the main task is removal of faded flowers, the process of cutting the flowers faded. It will not encourage continuing proliferation of perennials, but keep the garden looking fresh all season. For annuals, however, Deadheading will encourage continuous blooms throughout the season. Cultivating the garden soil is another task that should be occasionally through the summer. Growing caution against weeds settle in the garden and it loosens the soil allowing water and nutrients to reach the deeper roots of the plant.

By mid-summer, taller plants may begin to look or fall as they become top heavy. This occurs most often after a major downpour. Staking plants is important and prevents them from falling into the other and reduce the risk of mold and disease.

Continuing with the above tasks is important that the fall months as well. Towards the end of the season, however, perennials fade and eventually start their foliage dies down. The roots are still alive, but the upper part of the plant is done for the season. Reducing the plants that have passed is usually for aesthetic reasons. It can be done in the spring, but I recommend this job for the fall because there are many other things to do in spring.

Divide perennials is easily the best way to grow your plants. A few years after you plant a perennial, you'll probably notice that it begins to exceed its allocated spot. Divide perennials large in smaller plants will solve the problem of overcrowding in the garden while giving you new add plants to other gardens. In the fall when the plants begin to die back from preparing new planting areas somewhere on your property. If you do not have space for new plants, giving a distance to your friends. Simply dig the perennial you intend to divide out of the earth striving to maintain the highest of the Root System as possible. Take a spade or edger garden and chop or divide the plant by half. Remove any foliage that may have been broken. Replace the back perennials in the ground and back fill with a mixture of compost and soil in place. You will need a little extra land to perform correctly. Some perennials are easier to divide daylilies, hosta, iris and sedum.

Perennials are adaptable to a variety of landscape conditions. Most can survive a few hours of shade every day, but there are those that require full sun and those that will thrive in the shade. Studying the conditions of your own garden and have a plan or a list in hand before you head to the greenhouse effect. Once planted, perennials you choose to provide years of gardening pleasure
